Auspicious Sivaratri ushers in despair

Karimnagar, April 23: Who would have thought that an auspicious day like Mahasivaratri would, on the contrary, usher in despair and anxiety? But that is what happened to Thota Tirupati and his wife Tirumala on 12 February, 2010.

Their daughter, Deepika, was playing with friends on the terrace of the house opposite theirs in Shanigaram, Kamalapur mandal, when she came in contact with a high tension live wire.

The left hand had to be amputated and the right leg as well.

Two months on, the girl is inconsolable at not being able to sit the exams along with her friends. “I want to get back to studies,’’ she wails.

Meanwhile, the compensation promised by the Transco authorities is yet to materialise.

Tirupati is a farmhand, and the daily medical tab of Rs 500 a day is proving simply beyond his means.
