Aus announces review of defence culture

Melbourne, April 11: Australia today announced a review into the way women are treated at its defence academy after a video of a consensual sexual encounter at the college was transmitted to other cadets via ‘Skype’ software without the knowledge of the female cadet involved in it.

The move to review ‘defence culture’ was announced by Defence Minister Stephen Smith.

Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick will conduct a wide-ranging review into the way women are treated at Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA).

It will also review strategies for encouraging women into Defence leadership, according to media reports today.

A broader “cultural stocktake” would also be undertaken into alcohol and binge drinking, the use of social media and the personal conduct of all defence personnel.

Smith also announced that the commandant of ADFA, Commodore Bruce Kafer, had been told to take leave from yesterday in the best interests of ADFA and the Australian Defence Force.
