AU peace delegation meets Gaddafi

Tripoli, April 11: An African Union delegation has met with embattled Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi in an attempt to mediate an end to fighting between the revolutionaries and regime troops.

The high-level delegation held talks with Gaddafi and his senior officials in the capital, Tripoli, on Sunday.

The delegation has called for an immediate end to all hostilities and plans to hold talks with both sides.

During their two-day stay, African leaders will also meet opposition representatives in their eastern stronghold, Benghazi.

Meanwhile, the Western coalition says it has destroyed over 20 tanks used by forces loyal to Gaddafi against the revolutionary forces in Libya.

Revolutionaries criticize NATO for its failure to prevent the killing of civilians by Gaddafi troops. The Western coalition unleashed a major air campaign against regime forces on March 19 under a UN mandate to protect the Libyan population.

Revolutionaries have threatened to ask the United Nations Security Council to suspend the NATO mission in Libya if the military alliance fails to do “its work properly.”
