‘Attract kids to schools with extra-curricular activities’

Hyderabad, June 20:The Minister for Secondary School & Intermediate Education, Mr D Manikya Varaprasad, on Saturday stressed the need to attract children to the schools with extra-curricular activities like sports, games and cultural activities.

Flagging off the NIIT MindChampions’ Academy, which would set up Chess labs in another 2,005 government schools in the State, Mr Varaprasad said that the students of urban areas would have enough opportunities to participate in the extra-curricular activities. But the rural students don’t have such an opportunity. He underlined the need to encourage the rural students to participate in the games and sports.

The World Chess Champion, Mr Vishwanathan Anand said, “the game of chess makes significant contribution to the field of education. Since playing Chess improves memory, logic, analysis and decision-making, it serves as an important educational tool, he observed.
The NIIT MindChampions’ Academy offers a marvelous opportunity for the children to explore chess and at the same time benefits them in development of intellectual abilities.”

The NIIT MindChampions’ Academy is a joint initiative of NIIT, leading Global Talent Development Corporation and World Chess Champion, Viswanathan Anand, to promote Chess among young kids in schools.

The MCA Kits consist of computer-based tutorials which any student can use during and after school as a virtual playfield to hone their skills in the game of Chess. Apart from tutorials, promising Chess players get an opportunity to interact and play with NIIT MindChampion and World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand, in person at regular intervals.

Leveraging its inherent strength in technology, the NIIT MindChampions’ Academy has created a virtual community of Chess enthusiasts in the country. The Academy has Viswanathan Anand, NIIT Group Chairman Mr Rajendra S Pawar and President of NIIT School Learning Solutions, Mr L. Balasubramanian and a few eminent world Chess personalities are on its Advisory Board. (NSS)
