Attempt to control Paid News Methods

Central Election Commission will take serious steps to control the system of paid news in order to maintain transparency in election procedure for which complete cooperation from media is required.

Mr. D.K. Das, Director General of Election Expenditure was addressing the representatives of Electron and Print Media, Editors and Bureau Chiefs of various newspapers and agencies. He told that last year, on the occasion of elections, Central Election Commission received a large number of complaints regarding paid news in A.P. The media should a key role in this. By doing so, Muscle power and money power could be controlled. Mr. Das told that steps are being taken to check election expenses for which flying squads and checking units would be setup.

Amounts seized from various parties are also being checked. IAS Officers of other state are being posted in Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies. Cooperation is also being sought from Press council of India. Central Election Commission is giving a separate account number for each candidate to register election expenses. Monitoring Cells at District level will also be setup to check irregularities.

Responding to the question asked by Press Reporters, Mr. Das told that AP, Tamil Naidu, Karnataka, Nagaland and Himachal Pradesh have been declared as the sensitive States since many complaints have been received from these states.
