Atom bomb survivor recalls Hiroshima bombing

Japanese national Iso Harro, who survived the atom bomb attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, today recalled the horror when Allies war planes flew over during the raid and how his roof had blown away. Speaking at the inauguration of Hiroshima-Nagasaki Day and 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda, he recalled how his mother escorted him and his brother to a shelter and they returned home to get some food as his father returned late in the night without his sister who was found at a hospital after a four-day search.

Pointing out that while US President Barack Obama was aiming at a world without nuclear weapons, the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki called for elimination of nuclear weapons by the year 2029 at the International Mayors’ Conference held under the auspices of the United Nations.

Speaking on the occasion Swami Mukthidananadaji, President of Sri Ramakrishna Ashram observed, “Education which is a manifestation of protection and technology should not be used for destructive purposes.” He said people should understand and practice the preachings of Vivekananda to attain peace and harmony in the society.

All the dignitaries also paid tributes to lakhs of innocent people who perished in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during Second World War, by lighting a candle in their memory. UNI
