An athlete commits suicide, SAI orders departmental inquiry

NEW DELHI: Palender Chaudhary, an 18-year-old athlete, who represented India at the international level, allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday.

He is a native of Aligarh, UP. He found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room at the athletics academy, Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium.

He was rushed to Safdarjung hospital where he was declared as dead.

The police said, no suicide note was found and the reason behind this is yet to be confirmed and the investigation is underway.

According to the Sports Authority of India (SAI), he had an argument with his father on Tuesday over money. After that, his sister visited him in the evening and he took this step in front of his sister to threaten her.

The Director-General of SAI said, “She came out screaming and our staff went there immediately and brought him down.”

The SAI official said, “As the incident happened in our premises, we have ordered departmental inquiry and the inquiry will be headed by the secretary of SAI and it should be completed in a week.”
