Assurance to restore Urdu in Open University Hyderabad – Shabbir seeks clarification from VC

Hyderabad: Dy. CM and Minister of Incharge of Higher Education, Mr. Kadiam Sri Hari assured Congress leader of opposition in TS Legislative Council, Mr. Mohammed Ali Shabbir that the restoration of Urdu medium in Dr. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad would be ensured. He also said that he is seeking a report from the VC of the university.

It may be mentioned that Mr. Mohammed Ali Shabbir contacted Mr. Sri Hari yesterday and apprised him of the anxiety of the Urdu speaking candidates which they are facing due to the abolition of Urdu from the examinations of the Open University. He mentioned that entrance tests were held for admissions into various undergraduate courses and the list of qualified candidates has also released. Admissions in Urdu medium were abandoned before the stage of admissions.

Mr. Shabbir told that on the one side Govt. makes lofty claims of promoting Urdu and on the other hand, the university officials abandon admissions in Urdu medium UG courses making the future of minority students dark.

Mr. Sri Hari assured that the matter would be reviewed and justice would be done with Urdu.

VC of the university, Dr. Sitarama Rao told that the decision to stop admissions in Urdu is only temporary which is for one year. Giving the reasons for this decision, the VC said that there is no adequate staff for Urdu medium. Recently, three staff members have been appointed. He also informed that 1500 students wrote the test for admissions into various Urdu medium courses. From next year, the system of Urdu examinations would be restored. The VC also informed that a memorandum of understanding has been executed with MANUU for the preparation of text books. He appealed to the Urdu knowing students to cooperate with the university.
