(Siasat News)Mr. Wajahat Habeebullah IAS (Rtd) Chairman, National Minorities Commission told that it is very tragic that the communal riots of Assam are being linked to the immigrants.
He told that a team of National Minorities Commission visited the riot-affected areas in Assam and prepared a report with some suggestions. This report has been submitted to Govt. of India for taking necessary action. He was talking to reporter of Siasat yesterday. He told that the violence in Assam is the result of the conflict between Bengalese and Assamese. It is wrong to attribute it to foreigners.
He deplored that some T.V. Channels and newspapers are trying to chunk it up to the immigrants form Bangladesh. The issued is presented in Media distorting.
He told that State Minorities Commission of Assam is in contact with the Central Minorities Commission. In addition to this, some voluntary organizations have also sent their reports to Central Minorities Commission.
Mr. Wajahat Habeebullah told that as far as the matter of immigration from Bangladesh is concerned, it is not a new issue.
Many immigrants came to India from former East Pakistan and now Bangladesh in 1948, 1950, 1951 and in 1971.
However, during the past ten years, very few people have come Bangladesh.
Mr. Wajahat Habeebullah expressed his surprise on the reports of the involvement of some political leaders in the communal riots in Assam. He told that it is the duty of the Govt. to keep the miscreants under its control and also to punish them if found guilty.
The recommendations of the Minorities Commission have been sent to Dr. Manmohan Singh, P.M, Mr. Sushil Kumar Shinde, Home Minister and Mr. Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister of Assam.
The Commission has requested the concerned officials to take necessary steps for the rehabilitation of the victims, which may take sometime. It is hoped that the Govt. would take positive steps
