Assembly election results live: SP leads in UP, SAD-BJP surprise in Punjab

Samajwadi Party was on Tuesday surging ahead in Uttar Pradesh with leads in 155 seats in the 403-member Assembly while Akali Dal-BJP combine appeared set to retain power in Punjab as it was leading in 71 of the 117-member House.

In sync with the exit polls, the Samajwadi Party appears all set to emerge as the single largest party in the political live-wire state of Uttar Pradesh. However, the biggest surprise is the spectacular lead gained by the Bhartiya Janata Party as it engaged in a close fight with the Bahujan Samaj Party for the second spot.

The Mulayam Singh-led party took an early lead with it being ahead in 135 of the 310 seats for which trends were available till 9.20 am. The ruling Bahujan Samaj Party is ahead in 69 seats while the BJP is ahead in 67 seats.

The Congress, for which the elections have been a high-profile affair after Rahul Gandhi himself steered the poll campaign, is leading only in 27 seats. Others are ahead in only 12 seats.

Punjab results

Punjab’s ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine surged ahead of the Congress in early trends emerging after the first round of counting on Tuesday for the state’s 117 assembly seats.

As per the trends available at 9.30 am for 98 seats, the ruling alliance was leading in nearly 60 seats while the Congress led on 34 seats. On the remaining seats, others, including independents, were leading on one seat, while Mayawati’s BSP is reported to be leading in three seats.

Uttarakhand polls

Counting of votes in the 70-member Assembly in Uttarakhand began on Tuesday amid tight security.
