Multan: Asiya Bibi, who was accused in blasphemy case has been released from women’s prison in Multan on Wednesday. The Christian woman was acquitted by the Pakistan Supreme Court last month.
The Supreme Court verdict acquitting Asiya for blasphemy charges on October 31 had sparked large scale protest in various parts of Pakistan. Tehreek Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) and other religious parties staged demonstrations, blocked roads and vandalised public and private property.
Asiya was convicted and sentenced to death in 2010 for blasphemy against Islam. However, a 3-judge special bench of Justice Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and Justice Mazhar Alam Khan Miankhel heard Asiya’s 2014 appeal against her conviction and death sentence and overturned the ruling in her favour.
While the Asiya was acquitted, 1800 demonstrators were arrested under Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
