Anantapur, March 06: An Assistant sub-inspector and head constable were arrested on charges of extortion in Puttparthi yesterday and search is on for another constable, who was their accomplice.
According to police higher officials, the accused ASI Gangulappa, head constable Siva Prasad and constable Munya Naik went to the apartment of one, Patel (70) on February 28 and claiming to be naxals, they demanded `1 lakh. Fearing for his life, Patel gave them Rs 90,000 which was all the money that he had at that time.
Later, he went to the police station for lodging a complaint and was shocked to find that the trio were police personnel in the same police station. On identifying them as the ones who extorted money from him, he lodged a complaint against them.
A case was registered and in the subsequent investigation it was proved that the trio had resorted to extortion.
On the directions of higher officials of police, arrest warrants were issued against the trio.
Two have been arrested and one is at large.
