Nagpur: Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin grabbed 12 wickets overall as India comprehensively defeated South Africa by 124 runs on day three of the third Test to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series.
Ashwin, who was adjudged the Man of the Match, claimed seven wickets in the second innings to add to his initial five-wicket haul as South Africa were bundled out 185 while chasing a daunting target of 310 on a dusty and dry pitch.
Although captain Hashim Amla (39) and Faf du Plessis (39) displayed some resistance by putting their side’s longest partnership of the series, Ashwin wiped out the tail-enders with ease.
Leg-spinner Amit Mishra broke the 72-run stubborn partnership between Amla and Du Plessis by removing the duo in quick succession.
With the win, India have ended South Africa’s nine-year winning streak in away Test series.
Both the sides will next play the inconsequential final Test at Delhi’s Feroz Shah Kotla from December 3.
