Ashram school to be converted into hostel

Kakinada, March 23: The ashram school being run by the Indian Red Cross Society for physically challenged boys at Pratap Nagar is going to be converted into a hostel for college girls and working women. All the 48 boys pursuing education in the school would be shifted to nearby schools and required facilities would be provided to them, district Collector M. Ravi Chandra said here on Tuesday. A decision to this affect was taken during a review meeting conducted by the president of the society’s district unit and the Collector. Mr. Ravi Chandra said closure of the school was inevitable, as there had been a steady drop in admissions in the last three years. “Also, funds from the government are too meagre to run the school,” he said. Arrangements were being made to pay the arrears to the tune of Rs. 6 lakh to the teaching and non-teaching staff of the school.

Referring to the maintenance of the senior citizen home at Vakalapudi, Mr. Ravi Chandra asked assistant director of the Disabled Welfare department K. Jeevan Babu to submit a detailed report on steps to be taken to improve the facilities at the home. He asked secretary of the society P. Durga Raju to prepare estimates to buy a new van to replace the ‘Atma Bandhu’ van being operated by the society. Treasurer of the society Madhava Swamy, and project officer of the Rajiv Vidya Mission P. Ramesh were present.
