Municipal Administration Principal Secretary Arvind Kumar today went round the Hussainsagar and inspected the works being done to cleanse the lake of dirt and hyacinth.
HMDA Commissioner Chiranjeevulu, Chief Engineer BLN Reddy and other officials were present. Arvind Kumar asked the HMDA officials to take immediate steps to ensure that the lake is rid of dirt and other waste material that releases foul smell by engaging amphibious excavator. This will have a visible impact and would reduce foul smell to a certain extent. He also wanted planting of trees across the bund and also develop the islands in the lake into an attractive spot.
Hyderabad’s iconic Hussainsagar has a magnificent spread between the twin cities, delighting tourists and attracting a wide array of recreational and pleasure seekers over the years. The lake calls for a complete makeover in order to respond to emerging aspirations of an enthusiastic and vibrant populace. Once a drinking water source, the lake gradually became receptor of sewage and industrial effluents. To maintain water level in the lake all round the year and to improve the lake water quality by preventing pollutants entering into the lake, the HMDA has taken up Hussainsagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement project.
Under the project, construction and rehabilitation of sewerage facilities through construction of STPs, lake and nala improvement works, slum development, public awareness and community participation and capacity building were taken up. The Project is taken up with JICA ODA Loan comprising 7729 Million Japanese Yen (equivalent Rs 310 crore) and Rs 60 crore from the State government. (NSS)
