Arunima Sinha, a national level volleyball player, has become India”s first woman amputee to scale Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Everest. The 26-year-old, had lost a leg after being thrown out of a moving train by robbers and had climbed the word”s highest mountain peak, Mount Everest on May 21, 2013 with a prosthetic leg. Sinha had set her eyes on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, and is really happy to have achieved it.
While addressing a news conference on Thursday in New Delhi, Sinha said that disability is all in the mind and added that she wanted to be an inspiration for millions. “I had climbed Mount Everest in the year 2013.Recently on May 11, I have climbed Africa”s highest peak Mount Kilimanjaro (5,895metres) which is one of the seven summits,” Sinha said. Sinha said her family has been her backbone and given her moral support and the courage to follow her dreams of climbing the world”s highest summit.
“I have plans to scale seven mighty peaks in which I have covered Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro. My next mission is in Russia of scaling Mount Elbrus which 8000 meters above sea level and slowly I have plans for reaching all seven summits,” Sinha added. The seven summits are Kilimanjaro, Denali, Elbrus, Aconcagua, Carstensz Pyramid, Vinson and Mount Everest. She said that it was only the start to her journey and that she would like to appeal to the new government to take some initiatives and make plans to bring forward the disabled people of the society. Sinha hailing from Uttar Pradesh, was seriously injured in April 2011, while travelling to the capital, Delhi, to sit for recruitment exams to join the police force. Sinha was hit by a passing train and a life saving operation saw her left leg amputated. But the loss of a limb did not deter her as Sinha soon set her sights on a greater challenge, with the encouragement of her family. (ANI)
