Itanagar: Arunchal Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has resigned as leader of Congress Legislative Party today and Pema Khandu has been elected as the new chief of the party. Tuki said. “young generation should take over.”
The move has come in the party’s stand after 20 rebel lawmakers sent feelers to return to the Congress fold on the condition that there would be a leadership change.
A meeting took place on Saturday morning following Governor Tathagatha Roy’s directive to hold the floor test. Reports say that rebel Congress MLAs also to be present in the meeting.
Tuki, had requested to provide some time in regard to holding the floor test addressing a letter to the Governor. But the acting Governor Tathagata Roy declined his request stating that the “Monsoon will not abate as day go on but will intensify. These may lead to landslides and/or heavy fog in the coming days. Thus it is quite possible that granting more time may worsen things,” he added. “I do not consider this to be a serious objection at all. We all do things on holidays when circumstances so warrant,” he added.
The Supreme Court had restored the Congress government in the state on Wednesday, scrapping all decisions by the governor that had led to the fall of the Tuki administration.
The decision was seen as a huge blow to the BJP-ruled Centre that had imposed President’s Rule in the state and had supported Pul, who took over as CM from Tuki.
