Senior Congress leaders D.K. Aruna and Ponnala Lakshamaiah will undertake a two-day hunger strike over formation of new districts in Telangana State.
Aruna, Ponnala and other Congress leaders who are demanding district-status for their areas will participate in hunger strike camp which will be held at 11 AM on Saturday at Dharna Chowk, Indira Park.
Addressing separate press conferences at Gandhi Bhavan on Friday, Aruna and Ponnala alleged that the districts’ reorganisation was being done by the State Government in an unscientific manner. Aruna slammed Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao for not accepting the demand for creation of Gadwal district. She said instead of Gadwal, Wanaparthy was being made a district although it lacks basic infrastructure.
Ponnala reminded that KCR had promised district-status for Jangaon during the last election campaign. However, Jangaon was removed from the list for political reasons.
The Congress leaders also condemned Telangana State Planning Board Vice-Chairman Niranjan Reddy for his alleged remarks against DK Aruna. They said that the districts’ reorganisation was being done based on a faulty report by Cabinet Sub-Committee. (INN)
