New Delhi: JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar arrested for sedition has been imprisoned in the same cell the Kashmiri activist Afzal Guru was held in before his secret execution.
The JNU president, who was sent to judicial custody till March 2, has been kept in jail number 3, the same cell where Afzal Guru was lodged in, reported The Times of India.
“Kanhaiya who was brought to Tihar at around 8 pm has been lodged in a separate cell of ward number 4 of jail number 3. Two Tamil Nadu Special Police personnel have been deputed to keep a round-the-clock watch over him and ensure his safety,” said a senior Tihar official.
“One of the cells close to the jail entrance has been vacated and reserved for him. He will be kept under multi-layered security and only Delhi Prison officials or staff will be allowed near his cell. His food will be checked as a precautionary measure,” an official said.
Security outside the jail has been intensified and Kanahaiya was surrounded by 50 policemen when he was brought to jail.
Kanahaiya was attacked by right-wing groups and was “badly beaten up” while being brought to court premises on Thursday.
