Arrest cleric for his remark on cows slaughtered on Bakrid: Javed Akhtar

MUMBAI: Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar on Thursday sought his immediate arrest Muslim cleric for his remark on cows slaughtered during Bakrid.

Calling cleric’s remark “irresponsible and outrageous”, the 73-year-old Urdu poet said, “Secularism doesn’t mean ignoring or tolerating minority communalism. This irresponsible and outrageous cleric Tanveer Hashim should immediately be arrested for trying to create communal tension in Bengaluru,” said in his tweet.

According to Indian Express, Karnataka cleric Tanveer Peera Hashim, during his sermons on the occasion of Ramzan prayer made the controversial comments which went viral on social media.

Hashmi, the head of Hashim Pir Dargah at Vijayapura made the highly communal speech in Urdu in the presence of state minister Shivanand Patil.

“Let me bring to your notice, in two months time there will be Bakrid. In the name of cow, this satan (devil) will do a mischief. I am telling you (the minister) this beforehand so as to ensure that with the cow another sacrifice does not happen,” Tanveer Hashim was quoted as saying by PTI.

Hashmi is the head of Hashim Pir Dargah at Vijayapura, which happens to be a popular Muslim shrine. The video of his controversial comments went viral on social media.
