Around 8000 booked for traffic violations on Holi

New Delhi, March 20: Strict enforcement of traffic laws on Holi saw the police challan around 8000 people for violations, forcing them to shell out Rs 7.88 lakh as fine.

The special drive, police claimed, had its effect as the number of fatal accidents came down to five this year compared to last year’s 15. Seven persons, including a couple, were killed in accidents this year as against 15 last year.

“A total of 7,956 people were challaned for various traffic violations. Out of this, 6,660 were cash compounded and we have collected Rs 7,88,300 as fine from them,” Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said.

In the last 11 years, 165 people have lost their lives on the day of Holi with 2006 topping the list with 22 killed in 20 accidents.
