Around 5,000 Ganesha idols immersed in sea

Chennai, August 30: The two-day immersion of Lord Ganesha idols in and around the city passed off “smoothly” without any incidents of violence, police said today.

Police Commissioner T Rajendiran told reporters that nearly 5000 idols of various sizes were immersed at different designated centres in and around the city on Saturday and Sunday.

“The immersion passed of smoothly and peacefully, with nearly 8000-personnel posted for security. No incident of violence was reported. We had asked the organisers to conduct the procession peacefully and proper traffic arrangements were also in place,” he said.

The week-long celebrations of Vinayaka Chaturthi, celebrated on August 23, came to an end on Saturday with idols being taken in a procession to be immersed in the sea, including at the Marina.

The idols were taken 500 metres into the sea for immersion, police said.
