New Delhi [India]: Concerned agencies have seized approximately 30,000 kg of plastic carry bags (less than 50 microns), issued 1,650 challans and levied fines worth Rs 31,80,000 as Environmental Compensation till now.
The above figures are compiled by the Environment Department after obtaining it from the NDMC, three MCDs, Delhi Cantonment Board and concerned Delhi government departments.
The action against use of plastic bags are in motion since the National Green Tribunal (NGT), in a notice dated August 10, 2017, directed that any person found in possession or using such plastic carry bags shall be liable to pay Environment Compensation of Rs 5000 per default and the carry bags shall be seized on the spot.
Teams of officers from the Revenue Department, NDMC, three MCDs, DPCC and Delhi Cantonment Board have ensured implementation of said directions.
Acting upon complaints of continuing use of plastic carry bags, Environment Minister, Imran Hussain has directed the officials to intensify the drive against them to make a visible difference.
