Around 1,000 young girls living in slums and jhuggi jhopri clusters in east Delhi were today admitted to EDMC schools, who would now be provided free education under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ mission.
The students from underprivileged background were taken up by the municipal schools under the aegis of BJP National Secretary and East Delhi MP, Maheish Girri, the civic body said.
“A mammoth mission was undertaken by EDMC teachers and the office of the East Delhi MP, to go door-to-door to convince the families of these girls to send them to school. The parents were counselled and recommended, after which the girls are being admitted by the EDMC,” the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) said in a statement.
“These girl children will not only be provided free education, but also all other related expenditures such as books and copies,” it said.
To mark the formal commencement of the education of these girl children, Girri and other dignitaries felicitated the students by distributing admission letters to some of them.
“Today girls are the source of power and energise all walks of life. They hold a very special position in all fields, be it personal or professional. For the nation to progress, it is indispensable that the girls are educated and empowered,” Girri said.
