Tiruchirapalli, February 06: An Army Major was murdered by two unidentified persons when he attempted to prevent them from snatching gold jewellery of his wife at knife point at Mukkombu (upper anicut), a popular picnic spot across the river Cauvery near here, official sources said here today.
Army Medical Officer Ramesh (33), native of Tumkur district in Karnataka and working at Visakhapatnam, was in the district in connection with an army recruitment drive, police said.
He came here along with wife Anuradha, their one-and-a-half year-old son and a few other relatives, police said. The unidentified persons stopped Ramesh and others at Mukkombu and tried to snatch away his wife”s jewellery at knife point last evening, police said.
When Ramesh tried stop the duo, they slit his neck with lethal weapons and fled the scene. The Army Major was pronounced dead at a private hospital in Pettavaithalai near here where he was rushed to, police said.
