Armed forces gear up to meet cyclone

Hyderabad, May 20 (Siasat News): Following cyclone Laila hitting the Andhra Pradesh coast the Armed forces have geared to coordinate with the State Government officials and civil administration to provide necessary help.

According to an advisory from the Defense, the army has moved in three columns each consisting of 96 men including doctors and have deputed them from Hyderabad to East and West Godavari and Krishna districts.

Likewise the Indian Air Force has mobilized two Chetak and two MI-8 helicopters besides ten AN-32s and IL –76 aircrafts have been kept on standby to meet any eventuality.

A naval team of 33 men with five Gemini boats have already reached Narsapur in West Godavari district. Two Dornier aircrafts and two Chetak helicopters of the Coast guard conducted sorties today to trave the vessels still out at sea. An advanced offshore patrol vessel (AOPV) has also been pressed into action by the Coast guard.

The Advisory said that the high level meeting of senior Armed forces has been held in Delhi this evening to review the preparedness and planning of swift response as and when needed . The tri service Headquarters , Integrated Defence Staff has set up a Relief Coordination Cell at the Andhra sub-Area Headquarters in Hyderabad to coordinate all Rescue and Relief efforts and the situation is being closely monitored .
