Argentina denounces bombings on Libya

Buenos Aires, March 30: Argentinean President Cristina Fernandez has criticized the US-backed military operations in Libya against long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

“When you consider that these so-called civilized countries are trying to solve problems by dropping bombs, it makes me proud to be South American,” Fernandez said.

President Fernandez made the comments during her meeting with visiting Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

“In economic terms, we’ve been labeled underdeveloped, second-tier countries,” she said. “But those of us from so-called uncivilized countries have succeeded to resolve our conflicts in a civilized way, through international law.”

The Venezuelan leader earlier denounced military operations in Libya, saying it is aimed at seizing the North African country’s oil reserves.

Meanwhile, Russia and China had voiced their concerns over the military attacks against Libya.

Moscow and Beijing abstained during the UN Security Council vote on a no-fly zone over the North African nation.

During the visit, Chavez announced that he was ready to sign an agreement so that the National Institute of Industrial Technology of Argentina will build at least 20 industrial plants in Venezuela.

President Chavez visit to Argentina is part of his South America’s tour, which also includes Uruguay, Bolivia and Colombia.
