The Nampally Criminal Court here on Thursday convicted AR constable Obulesu and sentenced him to life imprisonment in the Aurobindo pharmacy vice- chairman Nityananda Reddy kidnap case.
It may be mentioned here that Aurobindo Pharma company vice-president was attacked with an AK-47 rifle by the accused while getting into his car after his morning walk at the KBR Park in Banjara Hills on November 19 last year.
After the shoot-out, Obulesu fled the scene after Nityananda Reddy opened fire with his licensed revolver in self defence and immediately lodged a complaint with the police. The investigating officers discovered that the AK-47 rifle found at the scene of offence belonged to the Grey-hounds constable Obulesu. He was arrested immediately and prosecuted. During the trial, Obulesu admitted to his crime.
According to police, Obulesu is a native of Kadapa district and worked in Kurnool in Grey Hounds wing. Later he was transferred to Hyderabad and worked in the Amberpet police station since March last year. He and three others had planned to kidnap Nityananda Reddy to demand a huge ransom from his family members. He complained that he lost his weapon AK-47 while he was coming to Hyderabad from Visakhapatnam. But the investigation revealed that he had deposited the weapon with a friend.
On the day of offence, Obulesu allegedly sneaked into the car of Nityananda Reddy which was parked at the KBR Park at Banjara Hills and threatened him with the AK-47. But the alert Nityananda Reddy struggled with the accused and fired shots with his licensed revolver. Simultaneously, Nityananda Reddy’s brother, who was with him, tried to catch the accused, but he fled.
The trial court, upon hearing the case and Obulesu’s confession, sentenced him to life imprisonment. (NSS)
