Hyderabad, August 05: Mr Ashok Singh, President of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee Linguistic Minority Cell, has appealed to Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, president of the AICC, to consider their demand for creation of separate Telangana state immediately.
Speaking to the media here today, he pointed out that the people of the region have expressed their strong desire for a separate state in no uncertain terms, through the verdict in the recent by-elections to 12 Assembly segments. In a letter sent by fax to Sonia Gandhi, he impressed upon the party high command on the need to concede the demand for separate Telangana.
He said that due to the Telangana sentiment, the TRS won the by-elections, but not because of Mr K Chandrasekhar Rao, the TRS President. He also termed the demand for the resignation of Mr D. Srinivas as president of the APCC, as uncalled for. The demand could have been justified if Mr Srinivas alone had lost the by-elections.
The sentiment was so strong that none could have faced the situation. Hence, he has appealed to the party high command to continue Mr Srinivas as president of the APCC and concede the demand for creation of separate Telangana.
He categorically stated that without the Congress, Telangana State could not be achieved as it has the majority both at the Centre and in the state. He also exhorted the student community not to resort to suicides and not to be misled by the political parties.
Mr Ashok Singh also stated that they organised a programme at the Babu Jagjivanram statue in Basheerbagh for separate Telangana this morning.
