AP Opposition opposes nod to raise Alamatti dam height

Hyderabad, January 04: Opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh today decided to press on the state and the Centre to get the permission granted by the Krishna River Water Disputes Tribunal to Karnataka for raising the height of Alamatti dam withdrawn, as it was detrimental to the interests of the lower riparian state.

The parties also wanted the state to ensure that Andhra Pradesh alone got the sole right over utilisation of surplus water from river Krishna.

Resolutions to this effect were adopted at an all- party meeting held at the residence of TDP President N Chandrababu Naidu, under his chairmanship, this evening.

The Opposition blamed the Congress Government for failing to appoint a competent advocate to effectively argue the state”s case before the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal.

They have decided to organise a state-level meeting with experts on the subject here on January 5 and chalk out their future course of action. Similar meets will be organised in districts along the Krishna basin, TDP sources said.

Leaders of TDP, CPI, Lok Satta and other parties attended the meeting. The CPM, which could not take part in the meeting, endorsed the resolutions and the plan of action.

Meanwhile, Major Irrigation minister P Sudarshan Reddy said it would soon convene an all-party meeting to discuss the Tribunals award the course of action to be adopted.

“We shall go for an appeal against the Tribunals verdict within the stipulated three months. We shall take the opinion of all political parties and also the experts before filing the appeal,” Reddy said after a meeting on the issue chaired by CM Kiran Kumar Reddy this afternoon.
