Hyderabad, June 26: As an Independence day gift, the Andhra Pradesh Government will provide ”safe bottled water” to every habitat from August 15, Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy announced today.
”No new development programme has been taken up by the government due to economic recession. But we cannot compromise on providing safe drinking water to people,” he said while inaugurating the two-day District Collectors conference here.
”With just Rs two lakh investment
, five litre of safe drinking water can be ensured for each person in a habitat with 1000 families,” he said, adding 50 to 60 per cent of the villages in the State would be covered within a year. The government wanted to involve women Self Help Groups in running the bottling plants and priority would be given to tribal hamlets, he said.
Taking note of the outbreak of water-borne diseases in the State , he said drinking water supplied through pipes now were not safe.
There would be no scope for water contamination in case of bottled water,he added.
