Hyderabad, January 18: In the wake of alleged irregularities in awarding PhDs by a university, the Andhra Pradesh government today decided not to encourage admissions to the degrees in distance education mode.
“We have instructed that admissions and award of PhDs in distance education mode should not be encouraged. This is to ensure quality in education,” state Higher Education Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha told reporters after a meeting with a group of Vice Chancellors here.
The universities should ensure that rules and quality standards are maintained in awarding the PhDs, he said.
The government has decided to act tough over the functioning of the universities vis-a-vis PhDs in the backdrop of allegations of irregularities in the Dravidian University in Chittoor district, Rajanarsimha said.
