AP gets Saakshar Bharat Award

Andhra Pradesh Literacy Mission Authority (APSLMA) has secured three national-level awards for successfully implementing the Saakshar Bharat Programme in the state.

Andhra Pradesh was the only state which got Saakshar Bharat Award in the country and will be presented by the Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari on the occasion of International Literacy Day on September 8 at Lucknow in UP, a release said here today.

September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17,1965 and it was first celebrated in 1966. In Andhra pradesh, Saakshar Bharat programme was being implemented in the 19 districts where female literacy is less than 50 per cent.

However, the overall literacy rate of Andhra Pradesh was 67.44 per cent as per 2011 census. UNI
