Hyderabad, June 23: Andhra Pradesh government will enact a law in the coming monsoon session of state assembly to engage convicts in community service rather than lodge them in prisons.
As per the proposed legislation “AP Community Service of Offenders Act, persons convicted for crimes that carry a prison term of up to one year need not spend the period in a jail, said state Home Minister P Sabita Reddy.
Rather, they would be required to do community service for a specified number of hours in public places like hospitals, parks and railway platforms under the supervision of district probation officers, she said.
Briefing newsmen at the end of the first meeting of the Prison Development Board chaired by Chief Minister K Rosaiah here today, the Home Minister said convicts who violate the community service order would be sent to jail for undergoing the sentence.
