AP Congress chief to contest in Nizamabad bypoll

Nizamabad(AP), April 25: Andhra Pradesh Congress president D Srinivas today hinted that he would contest the bypoll to the Nizamabad assembly seat scheduled to be held soon.

“Party workers have strongly demanded that I contest the bypoll. A decision on this matter would be taken by party president Sonia Gandhi. As far as I am concerned, I am guided by wishes of the activists,” he said addressing a party meeting here.

Srinivas contested from the Nizamabad seat in the 2009 assembly elections but lost it to his BJP rival Y Lakshminarayana.

Lakshminarayana, however, quit as MLA in February last in support of the separate Telangana demand. The by-election should be held in six months.

Srinivas reportedly wanted to contest the coming state Legislative Council poll from Hyderabad but the Congress high command has decided to give the tickets to local leaders.
