AP Cabinet says no to probe into Sompeta firing

Hyderabad, July 17: Be it Sompeta, Bayyaram or the “disappearance of the jewellery of Krishnadevaraya’’, the State Cabinet, which met here on Friday, nixed each proposal for an inquiry.

The demand for a probe into the Sompeta firing which left two fishermen dead came from Panchayat Raj Minister B Satyanarayana but it was vetoed by all the other ministers. As regards Bayyaram and the missing jewellery, the ministers opposed inquiries even though Chief Minister Rosaiah himself proposed these. In the case of the missing jewels, endowments Minister Gade Venkat Reddy opposed an inquiry while some ministers supported it. Rosaiah went along with Gade.

Botsa Satyanarayana, who hails from Vizianagaram district, picked an argument with Revenue Minister D Prasada Rao from Srikakulam on the deployment of the large contingent of police forces which led to the firing. He wanted to know why Prasada Rao had requisitioned so many policemen to protect the interests of a private company. Satyanarayana is learnt to have asked Prasada Rao why he had lowered the image of the Government. He compared the episode with the infamous Nandigram and said only a high-level inquiry would restore the credibility of the Government.
