AP Assembly adjourned as liquor syndicate issue rocks House

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly was adjourned for the day without transacting any business after two adjournments as the Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) members rushed to the podium holding placards and raised slogans that a judicial inquiry should be ordered by the government on the liquor syndicate scam. As soon as the House assembled for the day, the TDP members rushed to the podium and demanded that the Cabinet Ministers allegedly involved in the liquor scam be dismissed and the ACB report be made public as it conducted raids on the liquor syndicates.

Speaker Nadendla Manohar warned the members not to bring the placards in the House and display near the well and appealed to the agitating members to allow taking up of Question Hour. Intervening, admidst pandemonium, Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu said the TDP members should understand that a discussion was held on Friday last on the liquor syndicate issue for almost nine hours in the House. Thanking the Speaker for allowing the discussion on the persistent demand of the TDP right from the budget session began, Mr Babu said the TDP members still thought the debate on the issue was not proper.

The opposition members could come up in another form, the Minister said, adding the question hour should be taken up as only once or twice the questions were taken up in the session which began on February 14. He also said the TDP members could raise the liquor issue during taking up the budget demands. The Speaker then said the House had debated the liquor issue for long time and the subject was closed. Mr Manohar also said “if you (TDP) come in another form I will accommodate it.” As the noisy scenes continued, the Speaker adjourned the house for 30 minutes at 0909 hrs.
