Damascus, May 09: Hundreds of Syrians have gathered near the US Embassy in the capital Damascus, calling on Washington to stop meddling in Syria’s internal affairs.
The demonstrators chanted slogans against Washington’s “double standards policy” and stated that any US intervention would only “strengthen the unity of the Syrian people,” the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on Sunday.
The US administration has imposed sanctions on three senior Syrian officials as well as Syria’s intelligence agency due to what Washington claims as crackdown on protests.
“The US is looking at boosting sanctions it has already imposed on Syrian leaders,” US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced on Thursday.
Since protests started in mid-March, the Syrian security forces have constantly been clashing with armed groups in different parts of the country.
The Syrian Army has brought some areas under their control in the northwestern city of Baniyas, while Syrian troops have reportedly been attacked by the villagers on the outskirts of the western city of Homs.
Scores of people, including several security forces and soldiers, have been killed across the country since the beginning of the unrests.
The Syrian authorities blame foreign elements for the killings.
Middle East observers insist that the current unrests in Syria are far from an uprising and clearly intended to harm the core of the anti-Israeli resistance established in the Arab country.
