‘Anti-farmer’ BJP needs to wake up: Sachin Pilot

Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Friday said the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is now being seen as an anti-farmer and anti-poor party, needs to wake up and understand the reality of farmers’ suicide in the country.

“I think it’s about time that the BJP, which is now very rightly being seen as anti-farmer, anti poor party, needs to wake up and understand the reality of our country and what’s happening in our country and our states, especially Rajasthan. They must take steps to stop this awful cycle of suicides,” Pilot told ANI.

He also criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement in Parliament over the issue, saying he could have come out with a very strong message by announcing a loan waiver.

“I believe the Prime Minister’s statement in Parliament was not satisfactory. The Prime Minister could have come out with a very strong message, a package and a comforting resonating sound to say that we are with the farmers by announcing loan waivers, letting go of electricity bill or some financial composition,” Pilot said.

Earlier on Wednesday, Gajendra Singh, a farmer from Rajasthan’s Dausa district, hanged himself from a tree during AAP’s rally against the land bill , spurring a political blame among various political parties.

More than a dozen debt-ridden farmers have committed suicide in the country in recent weeks with many others criticising the Central government for being slow to respond to the crop damage and falling commodity prices. (ANI)
