Hyderabad: Soon after the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was approved by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, AICC gave a call for a rally against the Bill. Following which Congress activists and functionaries led by former MP and city Congress president Anjan Kumar Yadav took out a rally from Gandhi Bhavan. They shouted slogans against CAB and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah.
However, they were not allowed to proceed beyond Gandhi Bhavan by the police who took Congress members into custody. TOI quoted Anjan Kumar as saying, “The BJP government is targeting Muslims. Modi and Shah are destroying the secular fabric of the country. India is a secular country. The bill is against the spirit of the Constitution.”
It may be mentioned that Awaaz, a left-wing organisation, had also demonstrated against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) at the Ambedkar Statue Tank bund on Tuesday. As reported by Deccan Chronicle, hundreds of students of the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) demonstrated against CAB on campus. They carried out a rally and burnt a copy of the CAB.
Other organisations have also planned protests on Friday against the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). Earlier, Awami Majlis-e-Amal, in coordination with women’s and Dalit organizations had also announced a demonstration against the CAB and NRC on Friday.
Saying that the intention of the BJP-led government was to bring Hindutva Raj in India, Chaitanya Mahila Sangam secretary Shilpa lamented that such laws will deprive fundamental rights of certain sections of the citizens. Women will bear the brunt of CAB, she said.
