Colorado: Antarctica, the coldest place on the Earth broke the records of cold temperature. It broke the earlier record which was reported in 2013.
According to the report published in IB Times, the scientists who are working at the south pole have found that the surface temperature of the area is -100 degree Celsius. In 2013, the temperature of East Antarctic Plateau was -93 degree Celsius.
American Geophysical Union’s release claimed that -100 degree Celsius might be the lowest temperature that Earth can reach naturally. As per the scientists, in order to reach this temperature, the sky must be clear and the light dry wind is necessary.
It may be noted that moisture in the air can increase the temperature of the area as it traps the heat. All these atmospheric conditions were found in a small dip in Antarctic Ice Sheet.
Mr. Ted Scambos, a Senior Research Scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the Universtiy of Colorado-Boulder said that dry air is present in the area which allows heat from the surface to escape into space.
However, the lowest recorded temperature in a weather station would be 89 degrees Celsius which was reported from Vostok Station, Russia in July 1983.
