Another US soldier dies in Iraq

Baghdad, June 09: A US soldiers has been killed during an operation in southern Iraq, two days after a deadly attack on a US military base which left five soldiers dead.

The US military said in a statement that “a US service member was killed on Wednesday while conducting operations in southern Iraq,” giving no additional details about where the incident occurred or how the soldier died.

An Iraqi police source, however, had earlier reported a bomb attack against a US military patrol in the southern city of Najaf.

Five other American soldiers were killed on Monday in a rocket attack on the American Camp Victory base on Baghdad’s outskirts.

Washington officially ended combat operations in Iraq last August and according to US officials, the current role of the US army is to advise and help Iraqi security forces.

But despite claims by the United States of no longer being engaged in combat actions in Iraq, there have been numerous reports of involvement of the US troops in military operations in the war torn country.

There are currently about 50,000 US soldiers bases in Iraq, who are due to leave in the country by the end of this year in line with the 2008 US-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement.
