New Delhi: Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in India Counsellor Ji Rong has said that a landslide occurred in Milin County in the lower ranges of Yaluzangbu River in Tibet on October 29 leading to the formation of barrier lake, while adding that it will inform India with relevant information.
“On October 29, a landslide took place at the same location of the landslide on October 17, in Milin County in the lower ranges of Yaluzangbu River in Tibet Autonomous Region of China. The river was blocked, and a barrier lake was formed again,” Counsellor Ji said in a statement.
He added that the “Ministry of Water Resources of China informed the Embassy of India in China of the latest development, and began to share with the Indian side hydrological information every hour through bilaterally agreed channels starting from 10 pm on October 29”.
“At 9:30 am on October 31, the barrier lake began to overflow. The Chinese side will continue to closely monitor the situation of the barrier lake and notify the Indian side the relevant information timely,” Counsellor Ji further said.
Earlier on October 17, another landslide had occurred in the lower ranges of Yaluzangbu River in Tibet and a barrier lake was formed due to the landslide.
Yaluzangbu or Yarlung Zangbo river, originating at the southeast of Mount Kailash and Manasarovar in Tibet, is the upper stream of the Brahmaputra river. It later flows through the South Tibet Valley and Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon before passing into the state of Arunachal Pradesh in India. The river is known as Siang in Arunachal Pradesh and after reaching Assam, it is called Brahmaputra.
