Mumbai, December 28: Anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare broke his
fast this evening in the Metropolis after announcing his decision to
end the protest after a day and half of the hunger strike for a strong Lokpal bill.
The Gandhian, smarting under poor response to his protest and
bad health, also decided to suspend the Jail Bharo Andolan and
dharna outside Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s residence on
December 30.
He went on a fast at the MMRDA ground at the Bandra-Kurla complex
yesterday after paying floral tributes to the statue of Father of
Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Juhu beach.
He broke the fast at around 1830 hrs by accepting a glass of
juice from a girl from his native village of Ralegan Siddhi.
A frail looking 74-year-old Hazare, whom doctors had advised
to end the fast,
told the gathering at MMRDA ground that he would
now campaign in five-poll bound states against all parties that had
opposed his Jan Lokpal bill.
He said the bill, passed with amendments in the Lok Sabha
yesterday, was not acceptable to him.
