Angelina Jolie urges to end sexual violence in military conflicts

Wellington, Apr. 12 (ANI): Angelina Jolie has joined British Foreign Secretary William Hague to announce an additional funding of 36 million dollars from G-8 nations, for putting up a series of measures to prevent sexual violence and ensuring justice for survivors of military conflicts.

Jolie said that for too long survivors of sexual violence have been “the forgotten victims” of wars in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere and believe that now their voices have been heard, Stuff.co.nz reported.

The 37-year-old actress was standing alongside Hague, US Secretary of State John Kerry and others at a meeting of foreign ministers from G-8 nations.

Jolie, who serves as a special envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, welcomed the “long overdue stand” on sexual violence, saying that for too long international political will to prevent the abuse has been sorely lacking.

Sexual violence has been used as a weapon of war in several conflicts, including Syria, Libya, Bosnia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. (ANI)
