Demanding that the government solve their long-pending grievances immediately, Anganwadi workers launched a “Maha Dharna” at Indira Park here on Monday.
Though the police detained Hyderabad-bound Angawadi workers coming from various districts by buses and trains, a large number of them managed to reach the Dharna Chowk at Indira Park took part in the Maha Dharna.
In view of the “Chalo Hyderabad” call given by the Anganwadi leaders earlier, the city police tightened security at the Indira Park and deployed a large number of security forces. Though Hyderabad Central Zone deputy commissioner of police Kamalasan Reddy said no permission was given for the Anganwadi workers’ dharna at Indira Park, all the roads and bylanes leading to the Dharna Chowk were choked with protesters.
Telangana TDP leader Erraballi Dayakar Rao and MLC Nageshwar extended total support to the Anganwadi workers’ agitation. When the police tried to arrest the political leaders, the Anganwadi workers squatted on the main road at Ashok Nagar crossroads bringing the vehicular traffic to a standstill. They also demanded that the CITU leaders taken into custody be released immediately. (NSS)
