Andhra Pradesh to set up Innovation Council

Hyderabad, April 12: On lines of the National Innovation Council (NIC), chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Monday approved the proposal for setting up a State Innovation Council (SIC) for evolving new processes and structures to enhance delivery of services and improve performance of the state government.

The council will focus its efforts on evolving sectors key to growth of the state through new methods of innovation, using domestic resources whenever possible.

The Centre had set up a 15-member national council in August last year under chairmanship of Sam Pitroda, advisor to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovations.

It may be recalled the chief minister made a proposal for setting up a similar council at the statelevel during the Secretaries’ conference on January 3.

Unlike the NIC, the State Innovation Council will be a small expert group with government and non-governmental experts from relevant sectors to prepare a road map for the Decade of Innovations 2010-2020. The Centre for Good Governance would act as nodal agency for SIC.

The council’s primary function will be evaluation and analysis of policy initiatives in order to spur growth and innovation.

The objective of the body is to evolve an Indian model of innovation with focus on inclusive growth.

Apart from exploring new strategies and alternatives for innovations and collaborations, the council will also identify ways and means to scale and sustain innovations.

While encouraging all key sectors of the economy to innovate, the SIC will make special efforts to facilitate innovation by micro, small and medium enterprises.
