Anand happy with children’s interest in chess

Kolkata, December 21: World chess champion Viswanathan Anand today expressed satisfaction over the growing interest of children to the game in India.

“It is heartening to note than more children are taking up chess enthusiastically and mastering the strategies of the game. I am confident that the determination these children show at the game will help them excel in academics as well,” he said after felicitating the east zone winners of “NIIT Mind Champions Academy-Chess Master 2009” here.

He said the championship has initiated a large number of children into chess. Technology has also played a role in reaching out to children in every corner of India for introducing them to chess, he said.

Aditya Chakraborty from Delhi Public School here and Bappi Deb from Teliamura Higher Secondary School were adjudged winners of the east zone finals of the championship.
