AMU suspends a research scholar on ‘reports’ of him joining Hizbul Mujahideen

New Delhi: Aligarh Muslim University has suspended a Geology research scholar, Mannan Wani, following ‘reports’ that he may have joined Hizbul Mujahideen, chief proctor of the University said today.

The 25-year-old research scholar was disappeared a week ago and was suppose to be on his way home. When he did not reach his native place, Takipora village of Kashmir’s Kupwara, his family registered a missing person’s report with Jammu and Kashmir police.

“There was no clue about his (alleged) activities. He was regular in the hostel and university (sic),” Prof. Mohd. Mohsin Khan, the proctor said regarding his photo that surfaced on social media, where Wani can be seen holding an AK-47 rifle.

Prof. Khan added that the police had also carried out a search operation on university premises in order to probe his disappearance, as per a report by India Today.

Wani’s photo showing him holding a rifle was circulated on social media soon after his family had lodged the complaint with police, his last location was New Delhi and the family had last heard Wani on January 3.

The Inspector General of Jammu and Kashmir Police had earlier said the force could not confirm whether Wani had joined Hizbul Mujahideen and had expressed caution, saying the photos under investigation could be photoshopped.
