AMU: No evidence of sedition against students in early investigation says police

ALIGARH: In the early investigation against the 14 students of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) who were charged with sedition yesterday, police said that there is no evidence of sedition against them.

The police added that the charges will be dropped if there is no evidence is found against them. The FIR against the students was filed based on a complaint by BJP Yuva Morcha district leader Mukesh Lodhi. The FIR claimed that the students of AMU were indulged in shouting pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans.

Mukesh Kumar Lodi in his complaint to the police claimed that he and his associates were shot at and assaulted by AMU students outside the campus main gate because their motorcycles sported BJP stickers.

Eight of these students have been suspended by the university pending inquiry. However, the police said the video submitted by the complainant does not show the students raising objectionable slogans.

The students were booked under the sedition law yesterday following which tension rose in the university and Rapid Action Force personnel were deployed around the campus amid protests.
